THE 5 SECONDS RULE: The 5 seconds rule look simple and easy to understand, but usually it is a source for players complains, and many argues, when referees delay start counting, and some players feel the other team (often team that is winning the game at this moment) is taking an improper advantage. Under NTSSA rule 12.8.6 “ Team has five (5) seconds to put the ball in play as signaled by referee. Penalty: free kick to opponent at point where ball was. The same rule is in force in almost all facilities countrywide. The United State Soccer Indoor Association clearly declare, regulating Goalkeeper Violations, that “The opposing team receives a Free Kick for the following violations by a Goalkeeper: .: Controlling the ball with either his hand or foot inside of his Penalty Arch for over five (5) seconds”. The problems is: when the 5 seconds start? A mistake that many players, and also ref, make is start counting at the same moment that the infraction is called, or, in the goalkeeper clearance when he take the ball in hands. Under NTSSA rule, that is the same for almost every indoor facilities, the 5 seconds start when the referee give the signal for play, and usually that happen Once the ball is stationary and in position . l
